Before we begin I would like you to know that there is no specific dog food that stops skin allergies for all dogs, this is because the dogs would be allergic to different ingredients.
The skin allergy dog foods we would be looking at are the foods that have worked for most people I know and most people on online dog forums and Reddit.
I also advise that if your dog has skin allergies and the foods the doctors recommend are not working and your vet’s efforts are also not working, then you should take your dog to see a vet dermatologist, they would know what to do.
I have been told of cases where the vet thought the skin issues were food allergies meanwhile it was an autoimmune disorder.
I would suggest that, as you trying to find the right food for your dog’s skin, he/she should get a cytopoint injection to help with itching if there is any.
Royal Canin hypoallergenic dog food
This dog food does not contain normal protein but hydrolyzed protein. Hydrolyzed proteins are proteins that are chemically broken down into tiny pieces through a water-based process called hydrolysis.
Hydrolysis makes proteins invisible to a dog’s immune system and this is done because most dog food allergies are due to the protein like chicken, beef, etc.
I know people who this skin allergy dog food worked for their dogs but they were told that their dog has to stay on this food for the rest of his life.
It is not a bad thing for your dog to eat it for the rest of their life, it is safe but they did not want their dog to eat one type of dog food and not be able to give him other treats, they also complained about the cost.
I then told them to tell their vet that since their dog is on a hydrolyzed diet, they should run a test to try and find out which food he is allergic to, I have forgotten the name of the test but it involves feeding the dog potential allergens till they find out the ones.
After the test, they found out their dog was allergic to chicken, so their dog does not have to be on Royal Canin for life, they just have to avoid chicken.
I have checked the ingredients and they are safe for dogs.
Hill’s science prescription diet food sensitivities
This is another skin allergy dog food that contains hydrolyzed protein instead of normal and we have already discussed how hydrolyzed protein helps with food allergy. There have been a lot of testimonies about this food both from people I know and people on the internet.
I have checked the ingredients and they are good but from the analytical constituents, I observed that the protein content is a bit low which I don’t like. It still does what it is supposed to do, which is to help with the allergies and that is the most important thing for now.
This dog food is made in the USA.
Just like I have mentioned before, if your vet says your dog should stay on a hydrolyzed protein diet for life, it is better to conduct a test to find out the food allergen while your dog is on a hydrolyzed protein diet.

Some Taste of the Wild formula’s
I have seen a lot of testimonies about how some Taste of the Wild formulas have helped with skin allergies in a lot of dogs. The formulas are Taste of the Wild Ancient Grains with waterfowl, Taste of the Wild Pacific Streams, and Taste of the Wild Ancient Grains Bison and Vension.
These formulas do not contain hydrolyzed protein but for some reason, they seem to be working as a skin allergy dog food for a good number of people, so you can give it a try.
I have checked the ingredients and they are safe, I am also pleased with their protein content.
Purina Pro Plans Sensitive stomach and skin
This is another skin allergy dog food that I have heard a good number of dog parents speak well of. Most vets also recommend this dog food for dogs with skin allergies related to food.
It has good ingredients and the protein content is okay and I am fine with it.
It has a formula for puppies and another formula for adult dogs.
4 health sensitive skin dog food
This is also one of the most recommended skin allergy dog food, from the recommendations I have been seeing on the internet, it seems to be working well for people’s dogs.
The main source of animal protein in this dog food is hydrolyzed, so I am not surprised it works well.
The ingredients are alright and the protein content is okay.
You should know that if you are looking for dog food for your dog’s skin allergy and you don’t want to put them on a hydrolyzed protein diet, then conduct a test to find the food allergens. You would have to keep trying before you find the one your dog is okay
