Best evaporated milk for puppies, the ones to avoid,& how to make your own

evaporated milk for puppies

In situations when the mother is not producing enough milk, or the litter is much, or something happens and the mum’s milk is not available for the puppies, other things can be used and evaporated milk is one of them.

But not all evaporated milk is good for puppies, that is why I would be talking about the best ones to give your puppies. In this post, I would only be talking about two evaporated milks because does were the only two that I found that did not have carrageenan and almost every evaporated milk has it.

Carrageenan is an additive used to thicken, emulsify, and preserve foods and drinks. It is a natural ingredient that comes from red seaweed.  Though carrageenan is FDA-approved, some scientists believe that carrageenan can induce inflammation, digestive disorders, and heart diseases.  In an experiment, it was discovered that rats that were fed a carrageenan diet had an incidence of colectoral tumors and some had colon adenoma.

It is because of the controversies surrounding carrageenan that I say it should not be consumed by a puppy and carrageenan does not have any nutritional value, so your puppy is not losing anything.

In this post,  we will also be looking at the evaporated milk you should avoid feeding your puppy, how to make your own evaporated milk, and how to use puppy formulas with evaporated milk.

This evaporated milk is made in the US, the can liner is not made with bisphenol-A(BHA), you store the unused portions by refrigerating them in a non-metallic container.

How to make good evaporated milk for your puppy at home

Making your own evaporated milk can take hours depending on the quantity. I say so because you have to simmer the milk in a heavy bottom saucepan over low heat and stir often until it is reduced to about 1/3 of its original value by evaporating the liquid over low slow cooking. Depending on how much how much milk you have it could take from 45 minutes to an hour or more.

Ingredients needed

All you need is pasteurized, homogenized Grade A whole milk. If you don’t know any, you could try Listamilk whole milk, Happy Belly whole milk, and Natrel whole milk.

Steps

-Pour milk into a heavy-bottom saucepan, preferably non-stick.  Bring to a boil on medium heat. Lower to a simmer and continue to cook and stir often.

Tip: I advise that you keep the heat low and stir frequently. Otherwise, the milk will burn on the bottom giving the milk a burnt smell that the puppies may not like.

-Continue  to cook the milk on a low simmer until it is reduced to about 1/3 of its original volume

Tip: The more it reduces, the thicker the milk will be, it will continue to thicken as it cools that is why I say about 1/3 of its original volume is good.

-After it has thickened and reduced to 1/3 of its original volume, pour it into a glass container and allow it to cool at room temperature. Then you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Some extra tips

Cook the milk low and slow, doing this will help you achieve a much lighter colored milk, which would prevent the milk from scorching at the bottom leading to a creamier color.

You should use a whisk to make sure the mixture is lump-free.

If after doing your best, you still have too many lumps in the milk, you should use a hand blender to smooth the mixture.

The milk will continue to thicken as it cools, so you should take it off heat earlier than you plan to. This would help you obtain a pouring consistency and avoid a very thick consistency that cannot flow.

However, if you end up making the evaporated milk too thick add a few tablespoons of warm milk and mix it with a hand blender.
